But, then, a couple hours later I find that the laptop in my bag is very hot and the fan is running, apparently drawing the battery. I'm very concerned that I'm having issues like this with a one-month-old new laptop. My power setting is "When the lid is closed ==> sleep". The answer from @user386160 worked great to prevent my laptop from going to sleep. But I found out that my monitor was staying on even when the lid was closed (a.k.a. generating unnecessary heat).
